What’s Behind Our Corporate Culture?

Our culture is only as strong as our roots. Enjoy a peek under the surface  through this interview with our visionary founder and CEO, Rosalie Bianco. A few years ago, Rosalie looked at the devastating problem of our dead and dying forests and our rising energy prices and thought – what can I do?

Interview With Rosalie Bianco, CEO of New Earth Pellets LLC, DBA New Earth Green Depot

Rosalie BiancoWhat prompted you to start a new company, New Earth Pellets, during these scary economic times? 

I watched the beetle kill epidemic grow to enormous proportions while I built a small home in Grand County on Columbine lake. The trees were dieing all around us.  I'd never seen anything like it.  At the same time energy prices rocketed, fuel spills were happening, our economy was tanking.  My friends were losing their jobs.  It's a scary time alright.  But we can't expect that some one else will do something to turn things around.  I think people are the solution.  We have to be. America is great because of small business and the people who had and continue to have the courage to take risks, work hard and be innovative.  Every one of us has to do our part now. The solution is in individual responsibility and action.  To use a Margaret Mead quote,  " Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has."

So who owns New Earth Pellets?

So why wood pellets?

Because wood pellets made from dead beetle kill trees are a great domestic answer to our environmental, economic and energy problems. It addresses all three of the issues we are faced with now.  Wood pellets allow us to turn our beetle kill issue into an affordable, sustainable, local, green energy resource, that will create long term green jobs in manufacturing, forestry and service. Thats a lot to say in one sentence but its all true.  It also creates an outlet for long term utilization of forrest waste which is so badly needed as we move into an error where we plan to manage our forest better, helping us to prevent a wide spread beetle kill epidemic like this in the future.   

It seems crazy to me that we take our local valuable green natural resources like the biomass, that we use to make pellets, and ship this energy resource to places like Europe so they can be green.  Meanwhile, we wait at the shore for oil to arrive from overseas.  In the same respect we wonder what we will do with all this dead beetle kill wood while we use questionable methods to pull not so natural gas out of the ground and throw enormous amounts of CO2 into the air that wasn't in our atmosphere before.  Wood pellets are carbon neutral, easy to use, local and the most affordable way to heat your home.  The real question is, why not pellets?  It's time for the people to chose. 

What’s so important about what New Earth Pellets is doing?

Thats a great question.  Our little community mill can serve approximately 5000 local residential customers. Those 5000 New Earth Pellet Partners will save approximatly $80 million dollars and pour $87 million dollars in revenue into the local economy over the next twenty years by switching from propane or electric heat to New Earth Pellets.  Together we will save the earth as much CO2 as 10,000 hybrid cars and turn about 40,000 acres of dead beetle kill trees into green locally manufactured heat.  That's important. And of course we can't do that alone. The most important part is the people who become willing to change heating paradigms.  They are the real hero's in this story.  

What would you like the world to say about NEP 25 years in the future?

I want people to say we were ordinary people who came together to bring about a positive change. That what we did bettered our world and the lives of all of those who partnered with us. That we took several problems which included the beetle kill epidemic, the environmental and economic issues surrounding the fossil fuel-driven energy crisis and the suffering economy, and used these issues to motivate ourselves to create positive change. That we took the lead in creating a sustainable biomass industry that helps us to manage our national forest better. That we used our renewable carbon neutral resources and created and used green fuel locally. And that we had the courage to invest and innovate and create jobs when our country needed them the most; that we had the audacity to do it, and to ask others to join us. Yes, that’s what I would like for the world to say about NEP.

We’re acting locally. We are going directly to the public and asking each individual homeowner and business owner to switch or hybrid from fossil fuel heat which includes natural gas, propane gas, oil and electricity to carbon neutral green wood pellet fuel heat that’s made here locally. We are asking our Partners to do their part. And we promise them that we will do ours to make that change easy for them. We will supply, install and service high quality stoves, furnaces and boilers, helping our customers make the right choice for their needs. We will control the mill that makes the pellets to guarantee a steady, abundant supply of premium quality pellets with reasonable pricing. We will even deliver the pellets directly to their door to make the use of New Earth Pellets easy and convenient. We believe being a reliable one-stop solution for our Pellet Partners is important if we’re going to help people create positive change.

What do you believe you contribute most to NEP?

Enthusiasm.  I believe in people. I believe we all want to do our part to make a difference. I’m willing to do what I can – which may help others see how they can too.

They’re being hand-picked because of their incredible skills, their willingness to work as a team and because of their consciousness. They care not only for the earth, but for the wellbeing of the people on it.
